Viral clip of Indian PM Narendra Modi announcing special aid package for Afghanistan during speech at Israeli Knesset

RATING JUSTIFICATION

The iVerify Pakistan team investigated this content and determined that it is false.

To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan conducted a reverse image search to trace the video’s original source and carried out forensic analysis to authenticate the clip.

Multiple users shared a video of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media platform X on February 26, 2026, claiming that he announced support and a special redevelopment package for Afghanistan during a speech at the Israeli parliament. However, the clip is doctored.

Modi landed in Israel on Feb 25 for a two-day visit, where he met his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, and addressed the Knesset. In his speech, the Indian premier said India stood “firmly” with Israel following Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023.

He also told Israeli lawmakers that his country’s economic growth and Israel’s leadership in technological innovation formed a “natural foundation for our forward-looking partnership”.

HOW IT STARTED

On Feb 25, an X account that frequently shares doctored content posted the clip with the caption:

“Breaking News: Prime Minister Modi addresses the Israeli Knesset, ‘I am very happy to announce that, in addition to the 8.6 billion dollars military agreement between India and Israel, we will have a special aid package for Afghanistan’s redevelopment. Their sufferings must end. India and Israel will ensure that Afghanistan gets the security it needs to keep itself safe from terrorist hubs in the neighbourhood’.”

The video gained 1,234 views.

In the viral clip, Modi can be heard saying:

“What is happening all around the world, like what happened in Afghanistan recently, where civilians were killed by terrorists, is a shame. India stands with our neighbours in Afghanistan. Haibatullah is a dear friend, and I am very happy to announce that, in addition to the $8.6 billion military agreement between India and Israel, we will have a special aid package for Afghanistan’s redevelopment.

“Their sufferings must end. India and Israel will ensure that Afghanistan gets the security it needs to keep itself safe from terrorist hubs in the neighbourhood.”

The video was also shared by a pro-military account on X with the caption, “BIG BREAKING: Indian Prime Minister Modi announced a special aid package for the Afghanistan Taliban in the Israeli Parliament (Knesset), with the support of Israel.”

That post garnered 103,500 views.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality, keen public interest in Modi’s visit to Israel and Afghanistan’s relations with India, especially in light of tension with Pakistan.

A keyword search was conducted to corroborate whether any credible Israeli, Afghan, Indian or international media outlets had reported such remarks, but yielded no results.

Analysing the video with AI-detection tool video.attestiv flagged it as having a 70 per cent suspicion rate, indicating a high likelihood of manipulation.

A closer observation by iVerify Pakistan further revealed audio-visual inconsistencies in the clip, such as the speed at which Modi speaks, which is at a pace not natural to the way humans speak. Moreover, there is a visible disconnect between the Indian prime minister’s lip and other body movements.

Separately, a reverse image search yielded the original video of Modi’s speech dated Feb 25, 2026, uploaded on his official YouTube channel.

A review of the complete speech, particularly between the 1:05:38 and 1:37:25 timestamps referenced in the viral clip, confirms that Modi did not make any announcement regarding financial aid for Afghanistan.

In the original address, Modi hailed India-Israel friendship and civilizational ties. He condemned terrorism and expressed solidarity with Israel following the October 7 attacks, while also highlighting cooperation in defence, technology, trade, cybersecurity and innovation.

At no point during the speech did Modi mention Afghanistan, the Taliban leadership or any financial aid package linked to the same.

Modi’s speech was also widely covered by several Israeli, Indian and international news outlets, including The Hindu, The Times of India, BBC, Al Jazeera, The Jerusalem Post, and Dawn. None reported any such statement.
