Viral images show an American pilot captured by Iran after the downing of US aircraft

To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan conducted visual forensic analysis, AI-detection assessments, and reviewed credible international media reports.

Multiple accounts on social media platform X have been sharing images since April 4, 2026, claiming that they show Iranian forces capturing an American pilot after a US aircraft was downed. However, both images are AI-generated.

On April 3, 2026, Iranian state media claimed that Tehran had shot down an American jet over its southern region amid the ongoing US-Israel war with Iran. The US later said it rescued two of its pilots from Iran.

The Middle East conflict, which broke out on February 28 when the US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran, has now entered its second month with no letup in attacks by any of the warring parties.

HOW IT STARTED

On April 6, a pro-Iranian account on X shared an image allegedly showing a handcuffed US officer. “Breaking News: Iranian Revolutionary Guard officially announces the capture of a U.S. soldier, a pilot with the rank of captain, following the downing of an aircraft. Sources in Tehran are now broadcasting initial images showing the detained soldier in a custody position immediately upon her arrival at the Central Operations Room.”

The post gained 2.7 million views.

Another account shared the same image with the same caption, gaining 296,000 views.

The image was further circulated by several other users on X as can be seen here, here, here, here, and here; collectively gaining over 3.3m views.

Simultaneously, another alleged image of a captured US pilot was also shared on X on April 4, with similar claims.

A pro-Iranian account, based on past posts, shared it with the caption: “The American pilot is now in the hands of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.”

It racked up 106,400 views.

The image was subsequently widely shared by multiple users on X, as can be seen here, here, here, here, here and here; collectively gaining over 204,503 views.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its high virality and keen public interest in the US-Israel war with Iran, along with Tehran’s takedown of American fighting aircraft.

Inspecting the first viral image revealed multiple inconsistencies.

The alleged US soldier shown in the photo can be seen wearing a uniform with a US flag patch attached to both arms, whereas authentic United States Air Force uniforms display the flag only on the left arm.

Secondly, the absence of a name badge and the presence of non-standard gear on the pilot’s uniform also stood out, further indicating that the uniform was not genuine.

Other men sitting in the image have irregular physical features, including a distorted hand and a missing ear. They wore uniforms that loosely resembled those of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, but their insignia and rank structures were inconsistent with official standards.

Other anomalies included nonsensical text on flags and uniforms, unnatural background warping and objects lacking physical coherence, all of which are common indicators of AI-generated imagery.

When the image was analysed using AI detection tools, SynthID identified it as generated using Google AI. Meanwhile, Hive Moderation flagged it as 99 per cent AI-generated.

Similarly, Sightengine, another detection tool, assessed it as 97pc AI-generated.

Examining the second image also showed several inconsistencies; the lighting on the alleged US soldier did not match the environment and anatomical features appeared unnatural. Background elements, including furniture and walls, displayed warping and distortion, while objects in the foreground contained unreadable or nonsensical text.

AI detection tools reinforced these findings, with Decopy AI flagging the image as likely AI-generated. SynthID again indicated that the image had been created or altered using Google AI tools.

To verify the actual incident, a keyword search was conducted, which yielded reports from international news outlets, including Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN and The Guardian.

These reports confirmed that while a US aircraft was shot down in Iran, the missing airmen were later rescued by US forces, and there were no verified reports or images showing a pilot captured and held by Iranian authorities.

The claim that viral images show a US pilot captured by Iran is false.

Both images are AI-generated and do not depict real events. Verified reports confirm that the US airmen involved in the incident were rescued, and no credible evidence supports claims of a captured pilot.
