Viral videos of Indian soldiers resigning over government apathy during Operation Sindoor

The iVerify Pakistan team investigated this content and determined that it is false.

To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan conducted a reverse image search and a forensic analysis to trace the original footage.

Multiple people and accounts on X were sharing two videos since April 22, 2026, claiming that they show Indian soldiers announcing their resignations in protest against the Modi government’s apathy during Operation Sindoor. However, the clips are doctored through AI.

On May 7, 2025, the Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor, saying they had hit several sites in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to New Delhi, the operation was a response to the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack, when 26 civilians were killed in a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. India blames Pakistan for the attack, an allegation that Islamabad denies.

Per security officials, Indian missiles on May 7 deliberately targeted civilian areas, including mosques and residential neighbourhoods. Subsequently, Pakistan launched the retaliatory ‘Operation Bunyanum Marsoos’, leading to heavy artillery and drone exchanges before a US-led push helped broker a ceasefire.

HOW IT STARTED

On April 22, a propaganda account on X, which has a history of sharing AI-generated content, shared a video of an Indian soldier announcing their resignation.

“JCO of Indian Army Air Defence, issues his resignation on the first year memory of Operation Sindoor,” reads the caption of the post, which garnered 29,700 views.

In the video, the soldier can be heard saying, “When I woke up on May 10, I heard huge sounds. I asked my adjutant, he told me, Sir, these are Pakistani missiles knocking our indian installations. He was in shock, but I asked him how is the josh? He replied that it was high, but our artillery is not working anymore. He said the Chinese might have jammed it; therefore, we have sought the centre government’s permission to give us jammers to jam the Chinese jammers who are jamming our artillery guns. The centre government has given me a time of 50 years to meet the Chinese level of jamming, due to which I am tendering my resignation today. A nation that can’t protect its soldiers does not need to be defended.”

The same video was shared by a pro-military account, gathering over 30,000 views.

A separate video of another Indian soldier was shared on April 22 as well. It was posted by the same propaganda account on X that first shared the aforementioned clip. In the video, the soldier can allegedly be heard tendering his resignation.

“Breaking - Second resignation from Indian Army Air Defence JCO Anurag Thakur,” the caption reads. It accumulated 68,100 views.

The transcript of the video is provided below:

“Before Operation Sindoor, we had full assurance that our central government stands with jawans, but this is not the case anymore. No one cares about our lives. I lost 300 comrades, but the Indian government did not even acknowledge their deaths. This is not how you support your martyrs. More than 3 officers from my unit have resigned in the past year, and today, I am also tendering my resignation.“

Another user, who also has a history of sharing AI-edited videos, shared the same video with the same caption but in Urdu. The post gained 59,600 views.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality and keen public interest in the May 2025 India-Pakistan conflict as its anniversary nears.

An audio-visual analysis of the clips revealed discrepancies, such as the tone and delivery of the soldiers in the viral clips appeared robotic, with unnatural pacing, abrupt pauses and awkward emphasis on certain words. All are signs that are inconsistent with natural speech.

Additionally, the audio in the clips was distinctly clear for videos shot outdoors without any background noise or sounds of an outside environment — a telltale sign of AI-generated videos.

Running both videos through AI-detection tools showed that they were digitally manipulated. Hive Moderation flagged the viral videos as having AI-generated speech.

Truth Scan also flagged both the clips as being 11 per cent and 30pc real, respectively.

A reverse image search using keyframes from the first viral video yielded an X post by Indian news agency ANI, dated April 22, 2026, wherein the same military officer can be seen. “Bhuj, Gujarat: A JCO of Army Air Defence says,” reads the caption.

In the video posted by ANI, the soldier spoke in Hindi, recalling how soldiers responded to the adversary and upheld the security of the sites they were guarding.

“Operation Sindoor proved that the Indian Army and the jawans of the Army Air Defence are capable of ensuring that none of the country’s vital points was damaged despite several drones being sent by the adversary,“ he could be hearing saying.

This confirms that the soldier’s audio was dubbed over in the viral clip using AI, as he made no such confession.

Similarly, a reverse image search on the second viral video yielded an X post by ANI, dated April 22, 2026, with the caption: “Bhuj, Gujarat: A jawan of Army Air Defence says.”

The transcription of the soldier’s remarks, originally delivered in Hindi, is provided below:

“On May 10, 2025, I was stationed at Jaisalmer Military Station as a part of the Army Air Defence detachment. Its job is to safeguard critical infrastructure. While carrying out our duties, I saw an adversary drone approaching critical infrastructure. This was identified amid tough operational conditions. I attacked the drone using the Army Air Defence’s weaponry. Instead of taking cover for my own safety, I got into a combat vehicle and continued attacking it. Successfully neutralising it, a nefarious design was foiled.”

As with the first video, the original footage confirms that the soldier’s audio was dubbed over.
