Multiple users shared a video across social media platforms on March 17, 2026, allegedly showing Al Jazeera English sharing CCTV footage of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and military generals being killed in an Iranian missile strike inside a bunker. However, the clip is AI-generated.
The conflict began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel carried out coordinated airstrikes targeting Iran’s military infrastructure, including missile systems and nuclear-related facilities. The strikes marked a significant escalation in tensions between the countries, following a period of heightened regional instability and previous confrontations.
Iran responded by launching missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, US military bases, and other locations in the region. Several senior Iranian officials have been killed in targeted strikes, including national security chief Ali Larijani and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani on March 17, 2026.
One of the biggest pieces of misinformation currently doing the rounds are reports of the supposed death of Netanyahu. Over the past few days, a number of videos have surfaced, leading many to believe that Netanyahu had, in fact, perished.
HOW IT STARTED
On March 17, a PML-N supporter, based on his username and past posts, shared a video on X, allegedly showing a news report of Al Jazeera airing CCTV footage of Netanyahu and military generals being killed in an Iranian missile strike inside a bunker.
The caption reads: “Netanyahu sent to hell, ‘Al Jazeera news agency’ has shared ‘CCTV footage’ of Netanyahu’s death on the social media platform X, in which it can be seen that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was meeting with military generals in a bunker and everyone was killed in an Iranian missile strike.”
The post racked up 264,000 views.
A Turkish user shared the same video in a similar context with the following caption: “Al Jazeera has shared Netanyahu’s moment of death.”
The post gained 1.7 million views.
A pro-Iranian user shared the same video on X with the following caption: “Netanyahu has gone to hell. Similarly, the video was shared by several other users on X, as can be seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here; collectively accumulating more than 550,000 views.

METHODOLOGY
A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality, keen public interest in the US-Israel war with Iran, along with the status of whether the Israeli premier is dead or alive.
Inspecting the video shows that it contains clear inconsistencies that undermine its credibility.
The on-screen text includes a noticeable typo, displaying “Netan Yaho” instead of “Netanyahu”.

Additionally, while the video claims a missile struck the bunker, causing it to collapse, the roof remains visibly intact, with ceiling lights clearly undamaged, contradicting the alleged impact.

Furthermore, the audio transcription states: “We have just received CCTV from an Israeli official in which Israeli prime can be seen dying,” referring to Netanyahu only as “prime”, which is inconsistent with standard journalistic phrasing such as “prime minister” or his full name.
Analysing the video through AI detection tools showed that it was flagged for AI-generated content with Facia.ai determining it as a deepfake.

Deepfake Detection flagged it for 95 per cent AI-generated content.

Hive Moderation stamped the viral video as 98.3 pc AI-generated.

Meanwhile, Deepfake Total labelled the audio from the viral clip to be 51 pc AI-generated.

Furthermore, one of the shares of the viral video was also labelled as AI-generated by X.
X announced on March 4, 2026, that it would suspend creators from its revenue sharing programme for 90 days if they posted AI-generated videos of armed conflicts without disclosing that they were artificially made, the company said.
The policy change, announced by an executive of the Elon Musk-owned platform, targets what the company described as a threat to information authenticity amid the ongoing war pitting the US and Israel against Iran.

Lastly, a keyword search to corroborate the alleged incident yielded no news reports from credible mainstream international or Israeli media outlets.
