Multiple pro-Israel and pro-Iran users on social media platform X since Feb 11, 2026, were sharing a video of missiles in the air, claiming it showed attacks by the United States on Iran and vice versa amid nuclear talks between the countries. However, the video is old, from October 2024 and shows Iranian strikes on Israel.
Tehran and Washington resumed nuclear talks in Muscat, Oman, on Feb 6, months after earlier negotiations collapsed following Israel’s unprecedented bombing campaign against Iran in June 2025, which triggered a 12-day war.
US President Donald Trump has threatened strikes on Iran if no agreement is reached, while Tehran has vowed to retaliate against US bases in the region, stoking fears of a wider war.
HOW IT STARTED
On Feb 11, an Iranian pro-military account shared a video showing missiles in the sky, claiming it depicted an Iranian attack on the US.
The post was captioned, “We are at war. Airstrikes on America are ongoing. Pray for Iran,” and gained 2.6 million views.
The video with a similar claim was shared by multiple pro-Iranian accounts on X, as can be seen here, here, here, here, here and here.
An Israeli pro-military account also shared the same video on X on Feb 11, claiming instead that it showed a US attack on Iran amid rising tensions between the countries.
The post was captioned, “Breaking: The attack on Iran has begun. America has already begun the attack. We are at war. Airstrikes on America are ongoing. Pray for Iran,” and gained over 2m views.
Similarly, the same video was shared by multiple other pro-Israel accounts on X, as can be seen here, here, here, here and here.
METHODOLOGY
A fact check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its high virality and keen public interest in Middle Eastern affairs and the US-Iran nuclear talks.
A keyword search conducted to corroborate the video or any such attack by either side yielded no report from credible mainstream news outlets. No active hostilities and military exchanges have broken out between the two countries as of yet.
A reverse image search conducted to trace the source of the video yielded the same video shared by Iranian media outlet Khabar Online on October 1, 2024, titled: “Watch | Unseen footage from the night of Iran’s attack on Israel”.
According to the article, the video shows the night of Iran’s military operation against Israel on October 1, 2024.
A keyword search conducted to corroborate the claim yielded the same video, which was shared by multiple Iranian, regional, and international media outlets such as Faras News, Nabaa Jordan, Al Wakaai News, Washington Post, ABC News, BBC and New York Post in the same context.
According to the reports, Iran had launched almost 180 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1, 2024.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRG) said it fired the missiles in response to the assassinations of former Hamas political bureau chief, Ismael Haniyeh, in July 2024, as well as of Hezbollah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah and IRG deputy commander Abbas Nilforoushan on Sep 24, 2024.
