The iVerify Pakistan team has checked this content and established that the picture of Sanam Javed’s shirt displaying PTI chief Imran Khan’s image is true.

To arrive at this verdict, the iVerify Pakistan team investigated the picture and traced it back to January 1, 2024, when Javed appeared at a Lahore sessions court in a case of setting a PML-N office on fire.

HOW IT STARTED

The earliest picture shared of Javed that the iVerify Pakistan team found was shared by a PTI supporter named Waqas Amjad on social media platform X on January 1, 2024, at 11:43 am.

Extending his support to the PTI activist, he said, “Sanam Javed appeared in the court once again dressed in support of Imran Khan.”

The picture was seen by more than 156,000 people and has been shared by more than 6,000 people to date.

At a closer glance, Javed’s clothing read: “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.”

Digital media platform Siasat.pk also shared the image with the caption, “Sanam Javed appeared in court wearing a shirt with the picture of Imran Khan.”

The post was seen by over 63,000 people and shared more than 850 times to date.

METHODOLOGY

Given that the picture popped up amid an ongoing crackdown on the PTI, which has seen senior party leaders retire from politics or disassociate themselves from the party since May 9, the iVerify team decided to check its veracity.

To confirm if the blurry picture of Javed wearing clothing with an image of Imran was real or not, the iVerify Pakistan team found better quality footage here in which she can be seen arriving at a session court in Lahore on Jan 1.

The same video was also shared by news outlet Capital TV on Jan 1.

Investigating further, the iVerify Pakistan team double-checked with various news websites and found reports from Jan 1 on Javed.

News stories by ARY News and Dawn reported that she was brought to a Lahore sessions court upon the expiry of her two-day physical remand in a case of an attack on the PML-N party office in Model Town during the riots on May 9, 2023.

BACKGROUND OF THE HEARING

Javed is implicated in multiple cases related to the May 9 riots.

Mass riots broke out across the country on May 9 after Imran’s arrest with public property vandalised and state institutions attacked. They resulted in a massive clampdown on the PTI by authorities with arrests and detentions.

CONCLUSION

The iVerify team confirmed that the picture circulating on social media showing Javed wearing clothing with Imran’s image is true.

The image was taken outside a Lahore sessions court before her hearing on Jan 1.
