Viral video of thief dying during shoplifting while shopkeeper is mid-prayer

To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan performed a reverse image search to identify the original source.

Multiple users across social media platforms were sharing a video since January 8, 2026, showing a man falling dead while stealing items from a shop as the shopkeeper was praying. However, the video is scripted and does not show a real incident.

HOW IT STARTED

On Jan 8, an Iraqi user, who according to his bio is a journalist, shared a video on Instagram allegedly showing a thief dying during shoplifting while the shopkeeper was mid-prayer. The caption of the post reads: “He came to steal, but death was closer to him”.

The post gained over 540,000 views.

The same video, with a similar claim, was also shared by a Pakistani user who usually creates reaction videos, garnering over five million views.

The video also gained traction on X.

On Jan 27, local Turkish digital media outlet OdakTV shared the same video with a similar claim on X. The post was captioned: “A shopkeeper who was praying had his cash register earnings and the phone in his pocket stolen by an armed thief. The thief died on the spot.”

It gained 2.9m views.

Another user shared the same clip with the same claim. The video attracted 2.1m viewers.

The clip was widely shared on multiple social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, as can be seen here, here, here, here, here, and here; Instagram, as can be seen here, here, here and here; X, as can be seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here; collectively gaining more than 2.2m views.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its high virality and keen public interest in the matter.

A keyword search yielded no results from national or international credible media outlets regarding any such incident.

A close examination of the footage shows the timestamp as 2:12am, indicating nighttime, while the video itself is clearly filmed in broad daylight.

A reverse image search to trace the video’s source yielded a YouTube Shorts video posted by an account that repeatedly creates scripted robbery clips.

The clip dated Jan 7, 2026, was titled: “Maybe it was halal income.”

The description of the video reads: “This video is for entertainment purposes only. All activities shown in this video are fully scripted and performed in a controlled environment. No humans or animals were harmed during the making of this film. Please note that any weapons shown are non-functional props and are not real firearms. Do not attempt to reenact or imitate any of the actions seen in this video.”

As can be seen, the video was made for entertainment purposes and does not show any real incident.
