Viral video of Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani’s pants falling during inauguration ceremony in Multan

RATING JUSTIFICATION

The iVerify Pakistan team investigated this content and determined that it is false.

To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan conducted a reverse image search to trace the original source of the video and conducted a forensic analysis to authenticate the clip.

Multiple Indian, Afghan, and pro-PTI accounts on social media platform X shared a clip on January 28, 2026, claiming that it showed Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani’s pants falling during an inauguration ceremony in Multan. However, the video is doctored through AI.

HOW IT STARTED

On January 27, an X user, whose bio describes him as a staunch PTI supporter, posted a video featuring Gilani addressing an inauguration ceremony.

“Senate chairman’s shalwar came off. Bro, who are these people?? Which planet did they come from?? This generation is fed up of boomers … They’re way past their age now — you’ve already been minister once, speaker once, now just stop it and give someone else a chance … But no, they’ll keep clinging to power until they’re carried to the grave,” the caption read.

The post amassed 190,400 views.

The clip was subsequently shared by an Afghan user with the caption: “The pants of Pakistani former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani fell down. How can someone who can’t even properly fasten their own pants manage a country?”

It gained about 2,500 views.

Other X users also shared the video with similar captions, as seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here; collectively garnering more than 30,000 views.

The clip was further shared on other social media platforms such as YouTube as well, as seen here, here, and here.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality and keen public interest in Pakistani politicians.

A keyword search yielded no news reports from credible media outlets about any such recent incident involving Gilani.

Analysing the video with AI-detection tool Hive Moderation showed that it was flagged as 79 per cent AI-generated.

Two other tools, DetectiveVideo AI and Attestive, marked the clip as suspicious, with the latter saying that “parts of the video were probably safe”. Meanwhile, the former noted the video as showing “mixed signals”, again hinting that parts of it were likely edited.

It is important to note that the clip shared on social media was blurry and zoomed in — a telltale sign of doctored videos.

Moreover, a closer look at the video showed a “disclaimer” box at the bottom of the clip. “The video is edited for entertainment purpose only, and it should not be taken seriously,” it read.

Most of the clips shared on social media, however, were zoomed in to crop the line from the frame, a tactic aimed at misleading the audience.

Separately, a reverse image search yielded the original video of Gilani’s speech shared by media outlet Dunya TV on YouTube on Jan 26, 2026. The title read: “Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani addresses the ceremony.”

It did not show any instance of the ex-premier’s pants falling or any visuals that were shared in the viral clips.

The search results also yielded an X post by the Senate of Pakistan from Jan 26. “Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani addresses an event titled ‘PPAF’s Community Infrastructure and Economic Empowerment Initiatives in Punjab’; urges philanthropists to partner with govt to eradicate poverty,” it read.
