Viral notification from Indian Defence Ministry showing official’s removal from Chinar Corps

RATING JUSTIFICATION

The iVerify Pakistan team investigated this content and determined that it is false.

To reach this conclusion, iVerify Pakistan conducted a keyword search and visual analysis of the alleged Indian Defence Ministry document.

Multiple people, who appear to be pro-military, shared an alleged Indian Defence Ministry notification on social media platform X on October 1, claiming that an Indian Army official was removed from command shortly after a DG ISPR press conference on a false flag operation. However, the alleged document is fake

The Indian Army’s Chinar Corps on September 29, 2026, claimed that it had launched a joint search operation with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force in the Korag area of Yousmarg after receiving specific intelligence inputs. On September 30, the Chinar Corps said that a body recovered during a subsequent search in the Palmaidan area had been identified as a Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant named Mohammad Asif alias Hashim Moosa. Indian authorities and media subsequently reported that Moosa, also known as Asif Fauji, was a former Pakistan Army soldier and an alleged LeT commander linked to several attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs described his killing as a major blow to the group.

On October 1, 2026, military spokesperson Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry rejected the Indian account in a press conference and presented a retired Pakistan Army havildar, Muhammad Asif, before journalists. Asif said that he had joined the Pakistan Army in 2000, served with the Special Services Group from 2005 and retired in 2023, and that he was at his home when reports emerged claiming that he had been killed in Kashmir. Lt Gen Chaudhry said the Indian reports had wrongly identified the retired soldier as the militant killed in the operation and described the episode as a “false flag” operation.

HOW IT STARTED

On Oct 1, a pro-military account based on its past posts shared an image on X of an alleged notification from the Indian Defence Ministry with the following caption: “Top breaking: 30 minutes after DGISPR Press Conference exposing Chinar Corps fake encounter against Muhammad Asif alias Mosa, GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen Balbir Singh is removed from command and asked to report to the HQ with immediate effect.”

The post gained 51 views.

A similar account shared the same image on X on the same day with the same caption, gaining 73,600 views.

Another pro-military account, based on its past posts and profile picture, also shared the same image on X with the following caption: “Breaking: Reports claim that Lt Gen Balbir Singh, GOC Chinar Corps (15 Corps), has been removed from command and ordered to report to Army HQ with immediate effect. The development reportedly comes just 30 minutes after DG ISPR’s press conference addressing the Muhammad Asif alias Musa encounter claim.”

The post gained 2,126 views.

Subsequently, the same image was also shared by pro-military and other accounts on X, as can be seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here, further amplifying the claim.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its high virality and keen public interest in the matter.

A keyword search was conducted to verify whether any credible Indian or international media outlets had reported on the alleged removal of Lt Gen Balbir Singh or published the purported Indian Defence Ministry document but no credible report confirming the claimed removal or authenticating the document was found.

Examining the alleged document for visual and textual discrepancies showed that its heading refers to “IC-49532 LT GEN LIEUTENANT GENERAL BALBIR SINGH”.

In military nomenclature, “Lt Gen” is an abbreviation for “Lieutenant General”, making the wording “Lt Gen Lieutenant General” redundant.

Furthermore, the document identifies the XV Corps commander as “IC-49532 Lt Gen Balbir Singh”. However, official Indian government records consistently identify Balbir Singh with the service number IC-51040K.

A Press Information Bureau (PIB) record from 2017 identifies “IC-51040K Colonel Balbir Singh, The Gorkha Rifles”.

Another PIB record from 2020, when the president approved gallantry decorations for armed forces personnel on Republic Day, identifies “IC-51040K Brigadier Balbir Singh, VSM” of the Gorkha Rifles.

The same service number appears again during the Defence Investiture Ceremony  Phase I in January 2025 and Phase II in June 2025, where Indian President Smt. Droupadi Murmu conferred Service Decorations to the personnel of the armed forces; the list shared by PIB also identifies “IC-51040K Major General Balbir Singh, YSM, VSM, The Infantry”.

This establishes a consistent, publicly documented progression of the officer while retaining the service number IC-51040K, contrary to the IC-49532 mentioned in the purported document.

The document contains another significant discrepancy in the service number of the officer purportedly appointed to replace Singh, identifying him as “IC-63472 Lt Gen Amit Karthiyal”.

However, an official Gazette of India notification published by the Ministry of Defence identifies IC-63472 as Major Ravi Kant of the 16 Bihar Regiment, rather than Amit Karthiyal. A corresponding Indian government record also attributes the same service number to Ravi Kant.

Searches of publicly available government records and credible news reports did not yield evidence of an Indian Army lieutenant general named Amit Karthiyal associated with either this service number or the command of XV Corps.

In addition to these identity discrepancies, the purported order contains several internal discrepancies.

A provision under which the officer is purportedly being attached is shown as “[AI REFERENCE]”, resembling an unfilled template placeholder.

Lastly, the paragraphs are numbered 1, 2, 2 and 4, with paragraph 2 repeated and paragraph 3 missing.

Subsequently, the viral document was also analysed using AI detection tool TruthScan, which flagged the image as 55 per cent AI-generated.

FACT-CHECK STATUS: FALSE

The claim that a viral notification from the Indian Defence Ministry shows the removal of Lt Gen Balbir Singh from the Chinar Corps after a press conference of the Pakistan Army spokesperson is false.

The notification is fake and AI-generated.
