Multiple Indian and pro-Afghan users on social media platforms X, Facebook and Instagram shared a video on February 26, 2026, allegedly showing Afghanistan launching a retaliatory attack on Pakistani military posts along the Durand Line amid the current conflict between the two countries. However, the clip is old and unrelated to the current fighting.

Pakistan launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq against the Afghan Taliban after the neighbouring country opened fire on multiple locations across the border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Feb 26.

Authorities in Kabul had called it a response to Pakistani strikes against terrorist hideouts on Afghan soil over the weekend.

HOW IT STARTED

On Feb 26, an Afghan propaganda account shared a video showing a nighttime clash, allegedly between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with the following caption, “Big breaking news, extensive offensive operations are underway against Pakistani military centres and installations along the Durand Line.”

The post gained 43,000 views.

An Indian propaganda account shared the same video with the same caption, gaining 270,000 views.

A pro-military user, based on his past posts, shared the same video with the following caption: “For the first time in history, such a dangerous situation on the Pak-Afghan border”. The post garnered 130,000 views.

Indian media outlet The Economic Times also shared the same video with a similar claim on Instagram. The post was captioned “Mountain Mayhem! Afghanistan opens fire, two-hour gun battle rocks Pakistan” and gained 21,000 views.

Turkish media outlet TRT World also shared the same video in the context of the current clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan on Instagram.

The video attracted 340,000 views and was liked by 17,000 users.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality and keen public interest in the current conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

A reverse image search conducted to trace the video’s source showed that it was shared in different contexts over the years.

The video was found to have been shared during last year’s border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan in October 2025.

Digital media outlet Pakistan Today had also shared visuals from the viral clip in a news article on October 12, 2025, in the context of tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to the report, the Pakistan Army delivered a swift and befitting response to what security sources described as unprovoked firing by Afghan forces at multiple locations along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The video was also found to be shared in October 2023 and December 2024.

The earliest visuals from the video were found to be shared by an Indonesian digital media outlet, VIVA News, on September 6, 2021.

According to the news article, the visuals show Taliban forces launching an attack on the main base of the Afghan National Resistance Forces (NRF) Northern Alliance in the Pansjhir Valley.

A comparison of a screenshot from the video with the image used in the report shows the same features and elements.

The source of the video could not be conclusively determined since no other shares for it were found in the context of the fight between the Afghan Taliban and the NRF. However, it is clearly not from the current conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

FACT-CHECK STATUS: FALSE

The claim that a viral video shows Afghanistan launching an attack on Pakistani military posts along the Durand Line amid the current conflict between the two countries is false.

The clip is old, dating back to 2021, and is unrelated to the current fighting.
