Multiple people across social media platforms have been sharing a video of Russian President Vladimir Putin since April 5, 2026, claiming that he can be seen threatening the West amid the current US-Israel war with Iran. However, the clip is old and unlinked to the ongoing Gulf situation.

The conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran began on February 28, 2026, after joint US-Israeli strikes targeted Iranian military, nuclear, and leadership sites. In response, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones not only toward Israel but also towards US military bases and allied infrastructure across the Middle East, significantly widening the scope of the conflict.

Iran’s retaliation has included attacks on Gulf countries and strategic energy infrastructure, including ports and oil facilities, leading to regional instability and disruption of global energy supplies, consequently evolving into a broader regional crisis, with Gulf states increasingly affected due to their hosting of US assets and their strategic role in global energy markets.

HOW IT STARTED

On April 5, a verified X account that calls itself a digital media outlet covering politics shared a 48-second-long video of Putin. The first 11 seconds of the clip showed the Russian president speaking at an event, while the remaining video shows several clips of him meeting foreign dignitaries and attending other events.

“Vladimir Putin’s harsh message to the West (Trump): Who do you think you are? Constantly saying: You must … You have to … We are warning you … Who even are you? It is clear they have forgotten their place. Perhaps it is time to remind them,” the caption reads.

The post racked up 286,000 views.

The clip was shared by X accounts that seem to be pro-Iranian based on past posts with the same caption, as seen here and here, collectively gathering 273,400 views.

METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated due to the video’s high virality and keen public interest in the conflict between the US-Israel war with Iran and the role Russia could play in world politics.

A reverse image search yielded a YouTube video dated October 7, 2023, titled“: “Vladimir Putin Speaks at the 20th Annual Valdai International Club 2023 - English Subtitles”.

The visuals in the video matched the ones in the viral clip.

The results also yielded a report by Voice of America, dated October 5, 2023, titled: “Russia Has Tested Nuclear-Powered Missile, Could Revoke Atomic Test Ban, Putin Says”.

The report used a picture of Putin starkly similar to the viral clip.

Its caption said, “Russian President Vladimir Putin delivers a speech at the 20th annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, Russia, on Oct. 5, 2023. Putin said that Russia might revoke its ratification of a nuclear-test ban.”

According to the news article, in his speech, Putin announced that Russia had conducted the last successful test of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered global-range cruise missile.

The reverse image search further led to a report by the European Security and Defence website, dated October 3, 2025.

It also featured a photo of similar photo of Putin with the caption: “Russian President Vladimir Putin addressing the annual Valdai meeting in Sochi on 5 October 2023. During his speech, he claimed that Russia has tested the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile. (Sky News videograb).”

Moreover, a keyword search yielded the transcript of Putin’s address at the meeting, which was published on the official website of the Valdai Discussion Club in October 2023.

The relevant part from the transcription is provided below: “And actually, if I may, our Western ‘colleagues’, especially those from the United States, don’t just arbitrarily set these rules, they teach others how to follow them, and how others should behave overall. All of this is done and expressed in a blatantly ill-mannered and pushy way. This is another manifestation of colonial mentality. All the time we hear, ‘you must’, ‘you are obligated’, ‘we are seriously warning you’.

“Who are you to do that? What right do you have to warn others? This is just amazing. Maybe those who say all this should get rid of their arrogance and stop behaving in such a way towards the global community that perfectly knows its objectives and interests, and should drop this colonial-era thinking? I want to tell them sometimes: wake up, this era has long gone and will never return.”

The transcription matches the subtitles in the viral video, thus showing that the clip is not recent.

FACT-CHECK STATUS: MISLEADING

The claim that a viral video shows Russian President Vladimir Putin warning the West amid the ongoing Middle East conflict is misleading.

The viral clip is old from October 2023 and unrelated to the current conflict.
