METHODOLOGY

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to high virality and keen public interest in local cricket.

A keyword search was conducted to verify whether any credible Pakistani or international media outlets had recently reported on a young girl gaining attention for her performance in a tape ball cricket match, but it yielded no results.

A visual examination of both videos reveals several discrepancies. Most notably, the edges around the female batter appear unusually sharp and distinct compared with those of the other players, suggesting possible digital manipulation. In addition, the batter appears to be wearing slippers rather than proper cricket footwear, which further raises questions about the authenticity of the footage. Taken together, these visual anomalies are consistent with common indicators of AI-generated or AI-edited content.

The clip was analysed using Google’s artificial intelligence assistant Gemini for the SynthID watermark and detected a SynthID signal, indicating that the image likely originated from or was edited using Google AI.

SynthID works by embedding an invisible digital watermark directly into AI-generated media content. Unlike normal metadata, the watermark forms part of the content itself and is designed to remain detectable even after the media is doctored, such as cropping, applying filters or lossy compression.

A reverse image search was conducted to trace the origin of the viral clip, which yielded a video shared by the TikTok account TapeBall Voice on August 2, 2026.

It featured all the elements visible in the viral video: the second batter, the wicketkeeper, the pitch, and the lights. However, the batter on the crease in the Aug 2 clip has been replaced by a girl in the visuals circulating online.

The video was subsequently analysed using AI-detection tools. While several AI detection tools did not flag the video, Hive Moderation found it to be 54.6pc AI-generated.

Meanwhile, NVIDIA gave the video a synthetic score of 33.3pc, greater than the threshold of 30pc, adding that the clip was likely synthetic or AI-generated.

Similarly, another AI detection tool, Humantex Pro, labelled it an 84% AI-generated video.

The second video was also analysed using the Gemini tool for SynthID, which also labelled it as AI-generated or edited content using Google AI.

Furthermore, a few of the perpetrators sharing viral videos have a history of sharing AI-generated similar videos of a young girl playing cricket with men in tape ball matches.
